Santa Anna Mountaineers vs Zephyr

I took 666 photos of the Lometa game and that is just about the way it turned out! It was a painful pleasure to watch these young men play the game. I am not sure I can call them favorites but here are some of them:

See the photo album on the Sports page for the rest.

Injuries Take Down the Mountaineers

The Mountaineers entered their final district game without their starting fullback, center, and guard. Unfortunately, by the end of the game, they had lost their spread back and backup center as well. The Mountaineers actually had the lead at halftime with a low score of 13-12 on touchdowns by Michael Valencia and Devan Denton. Not long after the third quarter began, Michael Valencia, one of the top six man players in the state, went down with an ankle injury. He did his best to try and help the team, but finally took himself out. The Mountaineers were only able to muster one first down after his exit, and were forced to call the game due to injuries. The final score was 50-13 in favor of Lometa, but most would say they were very lucky to have gotten past us with so many injuries on our side of the ball. Valencia has done great things and put a positive spotlight on Santa Annaís football program for the past two years. He will definitely be missed and leaves behind a huge pair of shoes to fill for the next group of boys in 2014.

It definitely wasnít the way our seniors wanted to end the season, but we all appreciate the time and effort that they have put into the game of football and Santa Anna ISDís athletic program. Some things arenít meant to be, but the score doesnít always reflect what a great year we had.

Senior Class Learning Financial Literacy

Students of Coach Davisí Economic Class are now learning about financial literacy. The financial literacy course is an online module that instructs the student about the various aspects of banking, mortgages, applying for credit, purchasing insurance, and even what to look for when you are buying a car. C

redit card bills, debts, savings, and financial higher education may not be top of mind for most students, but the financial decisions they make today will have a long-term impact on their lives. Poor financial awareness jeopardizes teensí ability to succeed in todayís complex and competitive environments.

These online modules cover an array of financial situations with proven strategies on how the student can make better decisions pertaining to their personal status. These modules are informative, proven strategies produced in such a manner that students will find interesting and comical.

Santa Anna Mountaineers vs Lometa Hornets

The Santa Anna Mountaineers will face the Lometa Hornets in the fourth and final Division I District 9 game for the Mountaineers and third game for the Hornets. Santa Anna Mountaineers vs Zephyr

I took over 800 photos of the Zephyr game and here are some of my favorites:

Mountaineers Show Heart, but Come Up Short

The Mountaineers were able to regain their hard-playing form in Zephyr Friday night. With a key injury to full back Lucas Diaz, the boys were obviously shorthanded offensively and defensively. The center, Colby Nelson, had a spectacular performance with five receptions for 161 yards and two touchdowns before leaving with an injured shoulder and back. Senior Michael Valencia was in rare with 273 rushing yards for five touchdowns, and was also 14-15 with 310 passing yards and three touchdowns. Valencia also had eight tackles, while Jacob Herrod led the way with nine tackles. By the end of the game, the Mountaineers had lost three key players to injury and were unable to compensate for their absences. With three minutes to go the Mountaineers came within two points from a 60 yard touchdown reception by Jedidiah Herrod, but were unable to make the PAT. The Mountaineers ended up losing by 10 points, but showed the heart and determination we have all been waiting to see for some time.

The loss knocks the Mountaineers out of playoff contention, but hopefully taught them all many valuable lessons along the way. The final game of the season will be Friday in Santa Anna against Lometa at 7:30. These Mountaineers have worked hard since the beginning of summer, and many were up at 6:00 a.m. on summer days to get better, stronger and faster. Come show your support for them on Friday night and show them how much you appreciate their hard work and commitment to SAISD.
