The emerald edition of Santa Annaís premier event could be called the ďyear of the homeboys.Ē Along with professional teams from San Antonio and Sonora, Midland and Odessa, sixteen Coleman County teams slammed down their best efforts on everything from buffalo to pork ribs before the awards ceremony wrapped up late Saturday afternoon on the Entertainment Pavilion.

For all their hard work, an even fifty cooking teams took home $4000 in prize money. The big winner for the day was Guy Leverettís Itíll Do BBQ from Goldthwaite, grabbing $500 First Place money for Bison Brisket, $150 for third place Beef Brisket, and $100 for fourth place ribs, giving Guy enough points to add $200 for Overall Points Champion. Since the event is an official State Championship and the magic number of fifty teams were entered, Leverett is eligible for an invitation to the American Royal Invitational in Kansas City and the Jack Danielís Invitational in Tennessee.

Coleman County homeboys also strutted their stuff on the smoker pit. Melvin Lawrence took second place in chicken for $200 with Ole Buds Lane Guthrie and James Pelton tenth in pork spare ribs. Young Guns Tim Perry, Chris Cheaney, Aaron Guthrie, and Tom Guthrie made the trip to the winnerís table twice for sixth place beef brisket and second place money in pork spare ribs. Doug Tucker seized the 3-foot tall Best Beef Brisket in Coleman County Trophy from last yearís winner Huntland Trucking Company. Coleman County Circle C Cattlewomen sponsor the trophy and the $200 prize money.

Several new faces made the walk to the winnerís table. Matt Hansen of Sweetwater scored in every category: sixth in Bison, fifth in brisket, ninth in ribs, and fourth in chicken. Chris Hoodís Hood Barbecue of Blanket finished in the top ten three times, first in ribs, fifth in bison, and third in chicken, taking home $600. Jayde Henley of Midland made the winnerís walk twiceófifth in ribs and second in brisket for $250 prize money.

The large crowd benefited from the efforts of some of the best cookers in the southwest, passing through a serving line at lunch set up under the Armory oaks. Visitors were dished up plate lunches of buffalo meat and all the trimmings, while all around the Armory, the park played host to everything from arts and crafts vendors to horseshoe pitching and beach volleyball.

State Track Meet

Several students from Santa Anna participated in the UIL State Track Meet in Austin this past weekend. Brianna Sosa finished sixth in the Girls Discus and the Boys 4x200M relay finished 4th.

I was able to go also and take a few photos and here are some of my favorites:

Probably one of the most amazing things at this year's State Track Meet was the trial addition of wheel chair events including Girls and Boys seated shot, 100M, and 400M. I also took a few of the Girls seated shot and here are some of my favorites:

There will be many kids from the Santa Anna track team headed to state on May 10.

Briannah Sosa was the first one to punch her ticket at the 1A Division 2 Regional Track Meet held at Angelo State University. She started off the meet with a bang getting 2nd in the Discus. She has worked very hard all season, and expects to do well at the State Meet. It should be noted that she also earned 3rd place in the Shot Put, losing by just 4 inches and coming very close to making it in two events.

The boysí 800 Meter Relay team will also be heading to Austin. Junior Lucas Diaz, Freshman Jacob Herrod, Junior Colby Nelson, and Senior Michael Valencia, and alternate, Junior Jedidiah Herrod, have had a very successful track season.

Colby Nelson also got 5th in the high jump and 4th in the 110 hurdles, while Michael Valencia got 6th in the triple jump.

Going to state is a dream for them, and we are very proud of all of the hard work put into such a grueling season. The relay team is also expecting to do well against the teams from the other regions.

Congratulations on such an outstanding season!
