M. L. Guthrie Honored at Double H
Submitted by: Judy Meister
On Sunday, March 13th, the Double H Family Dining in Santa Anna hosted an event to honor life long resident, Montie Lester Guthrie Jr. Around 40 friends and family members attended the pot luck affair.
Host, Shannon Enriquez displayed photos provided to her by Lane Guthrie, of the crew’s favorite customer dating back as early as the 1930’s, as well as expressing her gratitude and the restaurant employees’ deep admiration and fondness of the elder Guthrie.
M.L., or as some folks call him, Grandpa was born in Santa Anna in 1919, to parents Montie Lester Guthrie (Rat) and Hattie Tom Miles Guthrie. Since that time, he has only been apart from the community while attending college in San Marcos, during a brief time working in Brownwood, and while serving in the United Sates Army Air Corps during World War II.
His time serving our country took him to Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio, Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada, Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, Mirana Army Air Field in Arizona and “Last Stop USA” Camp Shanks in New York.
Guthrie found himself boarding the Queen Elizabeth bound for Scotland where he served as an MP on the ship’s forward bow. Staff Sergeant Guthrie then made his way to Hardwick Air Base in England where he served as radio tower personnel.
After returning to his beloved Santa Anna, Guthrie married Billie Raye Barnett, and began his career working for the Untied States Postal Service. The two remained in the community where they found joy in raising sons, Montie Lester Guthrie III and Gordon Lane Guthrie, as well as ranching and dabbling in antiques.
Guthrie has been, and remains to be the inspiration and backbone of his family’s devotion to the community.
The 91 year old Guthrie says, “I’m a lucky man. I’ve got a good family, six grandkids, six great grandkids and great friends.”
