CCMC Physical Therapist Achieves Rare National Recognition
COLEMAN, Texas – Justin Tammany, Physical Therapy Director at Coleman County Medical Center, has been recognized as a board-certified specialist in orthopedic physical therapy by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS). According to statistics published by the ABPTS in 2013, less than 8,600 physical therapists have achieved the orthopedic specialist certification since it began in 1989. Tammany, who holds a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Indiana University, joins fewer than five percent of all physical therapists in the nation who go on to obtain board certification.
The ABPTS website states, “The specialist certification program was established to provide formal recognition for physical therapists with advanced clinical knowledge, experience, and skills in a special area of practice and to assist consumers and the health care community in identifying these physical therapists”. Candidates are required to have at least 2,000 hours of clinical practice experience prior to sitting for a rigorous six hour examination which tests their application and synthesis of advanced knowledge and clinical skills and reasoning. The orthopedic specialization is particularly valuable, as over 80% of physical therapy visits are related to musculoskeletal problems.
Along with this certification, Dr. Tammany has completed numerous educational offerings in sports medicine, industrial rehabilitation, manual therapy, spine rehabilitation and balance disorders. A small town native, he carries a distinct passion for rural healthcare and serving communities like those in Coleman County. He stated, “Unfortunately, many people assume that since our facilities don’t rival those of the big cities, rural healthcare is somehow inferior. I enjoy changing that opinion”. He will be formally recognized at a ceremony during the American Physical Therapy Association’s national meeting in Indianapolis in February.
Consumers can find a searchable list of board-certified physical therapists in their area at www.abpts.org. Coleman County Medical Center’s outpatient physical therapy department is open Monday through Friday with appointments upon request. The phone number is (325) 625-2135 ext. 307.

Shown in the photo are some of the attendees at the 2014 Newman Family Reunion held the weekend of 12-15 June at the Heart Of Texas Resort at lake LBJ, Texas.
The annual reunions began in the early thirties and have continued almost unbroken since with descendants of the original twelve children of J.T. and Lucy Newman of Coleman County. Most of the families still live in Texas but many are scattered across the continent and traveled from as far as Georgia and British Columbia Canada to attend. The original twelve children had thirty- five offspring to be the second generation of which there are only eight remaining. Successive generations now put the number into the hundreds.
Reunion activities include visiting, reminiscing, lots of laughter, Parlor Games like Dominos, Forty-Two, Checkers, Chess, Hearts. There is a Fishing Tournament, A Golf Tournament, A Mini Golf Tournament, Swimming, Water Skiing, Talent participation and a Gospel Hymn ‘sing a long’. Home cooking is featured at every meal. On Friday Nite there is a Catfish Fry with all the trimmings along with Homemade Ice Cream !
Yes, we are truly blessed.
