Santa Anna Band Members Make All Region Band

Contributed
This past Saturday two member of the SAM Band performed at the West Zone Association of Texas Small School Band All Region Junior High Band in San Angelo at the ASU Campus. All Region band members are selected by audition in December and those selected at the top of their respective sections meet in January and perform a concert. The schools represented in the West Zone include schools from UIL class A, AA and AAA. Participating schools were Llano, Sonora, San Saba, Brady, Ballinger, Wall, Brownwood, Eastland, Early, Menard, Mason, Comanche, Santa Anna, Bangs, Rising Star, Miles, Eldorado, Christoval, and Irion. Approximately 400 students tried out for the 80 piece All Region Band. The students from Santa Anna that were selected as All Region band members were Jake Smiley, 7th grade trombone and Mateo Lara 8th grade tuba. Jake was the highest ranking 7th grader in the trombone section as was selected as 4th chair. Mateo placed 4th in the tuba section. Auditioning for the All Region band was a new experience for the members of the SAM band.

The All Region Band met for the first time on Saturday morning and performed six selections for a large audience of family and friends that afternoon. To learn that much music in such a short time is very challenging and a lot of fun for the band members. This is the biggest band most of the members will be a part of and fun to play with other very talented players. Mr. Kevin Heckaman from Burnet HS was the clinician and was highly complimentary of the band for its great work ethic for a whole day and the level of musical ability demonstrated by it members. Mr. Lotspeich and Mr. Lotspeich are extremely proud of Jake and Mateo and also the others from SAM that auditioned. Mr. L commented, I know we have the talent here at SAM and its great we have a chance to showcase what we are doing. I feel very confident that next year we will have even more member compete and make the All Region Band.
