Six Mountaineers Added to National Honor Society
Three Santa Anna High School students were inducted into the Arleigh Harris Chapter of the National Honor Society Wednesday, February 29, in the SAHS Auditorium in a ceremony attended by students, faculty, parents, and grandparents. The ceremony was marked by the Principalís Charge from Chapter Sponsor, Principal David Robinett.
National Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. NHS serves to honor students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character-- traits that have been associated with the organization since it began in 1921. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but also challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and providing community service. The Santa Anna chapter was established in 1976 and named for long-time teacher and Elementary Principal Arleigh Harris.
Current Members of SAHS Arleigh Harris Chapter of National Honor Society are Kaitlyn Krause, Amber Musick, and Kelsie Tobin. Inductees this year are juniors Carlee Coats, Dakota Enriquez, and Hannah Hartman.
Carlee Coats is the daughter of Charles and Vickie Coats. Carlee has participated in basketball, tennis, track, band, UIL, Student Council, and has served her classmates as class president. She has participated in food drives, jacket/coat/blanket collections, Coleman Chamber of Commerce fund raisers, and the shoe-box project for needy children at her local church. She received the English class award twice, the theater arts award, and she works with her father on the ranch in summer.
Dakota Enriquez is the son of Tim and Darla Perry. Dakota has participated in all high school extra-curricular athletics, UIL, FFA, band, and Student Council. He received the Mountaineer Fighting Heart award in basketball as a sophomore. He is a member of the First Baptist Church Youth Group where he leads Bible study and has volunteered serving on summer church mission trips as a freshman and sophomore. He is also a Bible study leader of an early-morning student group on campus.
Hannah Hartman is the daughter of James and Stephanie Hartman-Edwards. She has participated in volley ball, track, band, Student Council, and gymnastics, in which she qualified for national meets. Hannah served as Mountaineer basketball manager, class treasurer and vice-president and band percussion section Capitan. She has volunteered her time serving the Ex-Student Association luncheon, church mission trips, delivering Meals-on-Wheels, painting school playground equipment, and cleaning the city park after Funtier Days. Hannah is a member of First Baptist Church and its Youth Group. She volunteered at FBC Vacation Bible School and she helped place US flags on veteransí graves at the local cemetery.
Santa Anna Mountaineer Softball
Santa Anna Mountaineer Softball kicks off this Friday in Gorman at 5pm. The Mountaineers are returning 8 out of 9 starters including All District Pitcher Genia Jones and Catcher Kindsey Holland. Sr. Aspyn King is making the move from 3rd to 1st Base with Courtlyn Lishka returning to 2nd, and Caitlyn Murray to SS. New comer Taylor Hogue rounds up the infield playing 3rd Base. Christina Diaz, Kourtney Guerrero, and Shelbie Newton will be playing the outfield. New comers Jordan Deleon, Destiny Clements, Jenny Castruita, and Kesly Manly will also see plenty of playing time this season. The Mountaineers will travel to Goldthwaite on Tuesday and will return home to start district play against TLCA Friday, March 9th at 5pm. The Mountaineers missed last year's playoffs by one game and are predicted to finish 2nd this year behind Sr. Heavy Eldorado.

Lady Mountaineers Basketball
The Santa Anna Lady Mountaineers for the second year in a row fell in the Regional Semi-Final game this last Friday. The tall girls from Leakey blocked shots and stole passes to rack up 60 points to the Lady Mountaineers 36 at the Class 1A Division 2 Region IV tournament in New Braunfels Canyon High School Cougar Gym.
Leakey fell to Moulton 47-44 in the Regional Final. Moulton had put an end to the Rochelle Lady Hornets undefeated season in their semi-final just before the Lady Mountaineers game Friday. Moulton will face Lipan in the first round of the State Tournament this weekend in Austin.
Congratulatons to the Lady Mountaineers and Coach Bacon and Coach Eubank on another great run!
Another of Santa Anna's finest has gone home. Elgean Harris, age 85, passed away Wednesday, February 22nd at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.
Visitation is from 6:30-7:30PM Friday February 24th at Henderson Funeral Home, 107 South 1st in Santa Anna. Services will be at 10:30AM Saturday February 25th at the First Baptist Church of Coleman with burial to follow in the Santa Anna Cemetery.

It is with the greatest sadness that I tell you of the passing of one of Santa Anna's and the Guthrie Family's patriarchs.
M. L. Guthrie Jr., age 92, of Santa Anna passed away Wednesday February 27th at the Brownwood Hospital.
Visitation is from 6-7PM Thursday February 23rd at Henderson Funeral Home, 107 South 1st in Santa Anna. Services will be at 10:30AM Friday February 24th at the First Presbytarian Church, 1007 Willis Street in Santa Anna with burial to follow in the Santa Anna Cemetery.

Lady Mountaineers Win!
The Santa Anna Lady Mountaineers defeated the girls from Walnut Springs 48-41 in the Tuesday night Regional Quarter-Final game in Priddy.
The Lady Mountaineers will face the winner of Leakey vs Round Top Carmine in the Regional Semi-Final of the UIL Class 1A Division 2 Region 4 Tournament at New Braunfels Canyon High School Friday, Februaury 24th at 6PM.

Lady Mountaineers Area Champs!
The Santa Anna Lady Mountaineers defeated the Priddy Lady Pirates by a score of 46-26 (UIL reports 46-27) in a Friday night Conference 1A Division 2 Area Championship game at Brownwood High School.
The Lady Mountaineer defense stopped the Lady Pirates who had just defeated Lingleville 58-52 in their Bi-District game.
The Regional Quarter Final game is set for Tuesday, February 21st and Santa Anna faces Walnut Springs in Priddy at 6:00pm. Admission prices: Adults $5 Students $3
The winner heads to the Conference 1A Division 2 Region 4 Tournament in New Braunfels this Friday and Saturday February 24th and 25th.

I had a little over three inches of rain in my gauges but I am not sure when I dumped them out last.
Tex Wright reports, "This past Wednesday night we had .52 over a 4-5 hour period. Nice!
On Friday night/Saturday morning, we received running water (tank filler) 2.30 inches.

Santa Anna Park and Armory Committee
Notice of Closing of Road
When the Bannister Street railroad crossing was closed in 1998, the city of Santa Anna formally closed the section of road from Bannister Street around to the intersection of Houston and South Santa Fe. The Park and Armory Committee is now in the process of taking that area into the confines of Gary James Park. There are clearly defined markers where the road stops at each end. It is no longer a public thoroughfare and is no longer open to through traffic. The map shows in black the area now closed.

COLLEGE FAFSA WORKSHOP
FOR SAHS SENIORS AND PARENTS
On Thursday, February 9, Ronny Barnes of Panhandle-Plains Higher Education Authority will be on hand to assist seniors and their parents in filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and securing a FAFSA PIN. The FAFSA is the qualifying instrument for the Pell Grant, which is the common starting point for all financial aid. The process should last approximately one hour, with time for individual help and/or questions to follow. Applications may be filled out using school computers. Parents should bring their familyís current income tax forms or an accurate estimate. Refreshments will be provided.
