Road Closed

Burlington Northern and Santa Fe crews began construction of new railroad track crossings on FM 1176, also known as First Street, on Monday. According to TXDOT website the "railroad crossing is closed until BNSF is done with work at this location." It is estimated that the construction will be over by Friday the 29th.

Heavy Equipment moved in by BNSF to tear out the old crossings. Two of the four tracks have been removed since BNSF closed the Third Street crossing several years ago. The new concrete crossings that have been stacked up by the crossing for quite a while will soon replace the old wooden crossings.

First Christian Church Roof

Work continues on the First Christian Church roof. Monday the 25th it looked like the workers from JMJ Roofing have started on the Church steeple. I think they waited for the windiest day of the year!

Smoke from grassfires filled the skies Monday afternoon as the low humidity, dry conditions, and high winds blowing through West Texas caused fires across many Texas Counties including Coleman County.

Fire trucks from the Santa Anna Volunteer Fire Department were out fighting the blazes early Monday evening.

More First Christian Church Roof

I know some of you maybe be getting tired of my roof story but I am trying to keep the Smith's up on what is happening in our "hood"...

The roof is coming along pretty good considering I poured another half an inch or so of rain out of my gauges on Sunday. Most of the rain came this last Saturday morning, February 16th. We also got a reminder that it is still February with the cooler temperatures. Sunday was a totally different season as everyone was outside playing around except for the die hard Nascar fans like Chrystal. Her man, Kyle Busch, didn't win Sunday's Daytona 500 but he dominated the opening Nextel Cup race with 86 laps as the leader. The really nice sunny day also reminded me that it was going to be Summer pretty soon and time work on that tan and to start working out a little harder.

Speaking of tan, be sure and check out Sunkissed Tanning Salon below for a good deal. Be sure and tell Amber that you saw it on and you will get a free subscription to the News... just kidding Amber! Wanna be TV star, Terry Thompson, told me to be sure and take off my cap when I went to tan so my bald head would tan too. I took notes from him when he cooked his egg this last Summer!

Anyhow, back to the roof... Sunday when I took these pictures the sanctuary appeared to be finished as well as most of the parsonage. It was dark when I got home Monday night but it looked like the parsonage and the back of the Church, what I call the Holy of Holies, was finished, leaving just the steeple. That should be quite a roofing experience, not to say that I am sure the rest of the Church hasn't.

Work continues on the First Christian Church roof. Workers from JM Roofing took advantage of the nice weather Saturday to get a lot of the roof done on the Church. They have also begun to tear off and replace the roof on the parsonage.

As Jessica and I headed to Coleman Sunday morning I noticed an extra car at the Church. As we passed by I noticed that the SUV said KTAB on the side. I turned around after getting up town and went by just in time to catch the KTAB reporter interviewing Mrs. Juanita Naron out in front of the Church.

We don't get KTAB since KTAB won't let DirecTV customers have it over their satellite so I didn't get to watch their news for it but I did find a brief note about it on the KTAB web site titled "Historical Church Endangered".

Shouldn't that be "Historic"?

Anyhow, while reading the brief article it mentions the Church was listed on the Preservation Texas, Inc,'s Most Endangered Places 2008

Work continues on the First Christian Church roof. See the original story below with updates at the bottom.

The weather has been better for roofing this week with temperatures in the seventies and eighties and little wind compared to the 40 mile per hour winds last week.

The threat of rain passed early Tuesday morning with no measurable rainfall.

Speaking of rainfall I dumped a half inch or so out of my rain gauges last week some time. I have been working late so I am not sure exactly what day it was.

First Christian Church

Work to replace the roof began Monday, January 28th, on the historic First Christian Church of Santa Anna.

The Church, located on the corner of South First Street and Avenue C, is one of Santa Anna's Texas Historic Landmarks and bears a Texas Historical Commission Official Historical Medallion which reads:

Founded in 1894, this congregation worshiped in various places until members purchased this lot in 1900 and began construction of their own building. The Rev. E. M. Douthit and the Rev. B. B. Sanders led the dedication ceremonies in April 1901. A solid brass bell hangs in the off-center entry tower and spire that dominates this frame church. The interior has original beaded ceiling and wainscoting. The kerosene lamp in the vestibule has been converted to electricity. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1976

The Church renovation has been the focus of the Santa Anna Foundation and recent community fund raising efforts by the Santa Anna Retail Merchants Association during it's Christmas Tour of Churches.

The roof is being replaced by JMJ Roofing of Coleman.

The back part of the Church on the North side has been completely removed and roof felt/tar paper rolled out.

Work has begun tearing the roof off of the sanctuary of the Church on the South end of the East side.

As of Tuesday, February 5th, the East side has been completely removed, re decked, roof felt/tar paper rolled out and re-shingling has begun.

Work has begun tearing the roof off of the sanctuary of the Church on the West side.
