What Time is it?
That is the name of one of Santa Anna's newer businesses on the East end of town. Located in what used to be the Santa Anna Lumber Company operated by Harry Crews and more recently the home of Charlotte Moseley's ceramic group.
Mesquite Time owner, Jerry Ellis, started work on the old lumber yard buildings in the Spring of 2009. Jerry and his daughter Jamie Straus, and her two year old son Parker, keep the shop open and work on various wood projects.
Most probably would have torn the old buildings down but Jerry took the old buildings, and has given them new life. I have followed the progress with a few pictures and meant to write this story last year.
I have known Jerry for about thirty years. I worked with his father, Cecil Ellis, in the oil field back in the early Eighties. Cecil was always very proud of Jerry and especially happy when he moved back home to the Trickham area from the Gulf Coast. I think Cecil worried sometimes about how Jerry was going to make a living around here, especially farming and ranching. Jerry raised registered cattle for a while and then became the manager of Coleman County Broadcasting, a subsidiary of Coleman County Telephone Cooperative, that sold wireless TV cable and DirecTV satellite television service. That is where I had the opportunity to go work for Jerry. I will never forget the day I was working for Dr Pepper in one of the grocery stores in Brownwood and Jerry talked to me about going to work for him. I too worried how I was going to make a living in Santa Anna, but it was one of the best jobs I ever had. I enjoyed working for Jerry and he was one of the finest men I have ever worked for. He always cared for his employees like we were his own children and I even had the chance to work with his son Bryce and daughter Jamie when they helped out in the Summers. They knew how to work hard just like their father and grandfather.
One thing about making a living in Santa Anna is that you are guaranteed that you will have to work hard at it. Jerry and Jamie are certainly the ones that can do it. Their work is that of a true artists and you should stop by sometime and see for yourself. In the mean time see the Business Page for more information about Mesquite Time...
Well it's time for the lights to shine in Santa Anna, as the Santa Anna Mountaineers take on the Sterling City Eagles.

Dear Friends and Supporters of the Santa Anna Mountaineers,
It’s that time again when we are all getting ready for cooler weather and Mountaineer Football! The Santa Anna Booster Club is already getting started on several projects for this football season. First, we have a new program of ADOPT–A–MOUNTAINEER where anyone from infants to school age children to even the oldest of Mountaineer fans can be a “Buddy” of a SAM High School Football player or Varsity Cheerleader. Also, we are getting ready for Homecoming with our Spirit Ads for the Homecoming Souvenir Football program. Please click the links to printable forms below to see the flyer for each of these.
Booster Club will again be running the concession stand at home football games (both Thursday and Friday night games) and we’re always looking for volunteers to work with us. If you want to sign up to work a game, please contact Stephanie Hartman at 325–348–3337.
Just as a reminder, you don’t have to have a student in Jr. High or High School to be involved in Booster Club. We invite you to come join us for our monthly Booster Club meetings. We want you to join us to share ideas, be informed of what all the Booster Club is doing to support our school and find out what you can do to help. We meet the second Sunday of each month at 1:30 at the Football concession stand.

Heather McMillan Recieves TCTA Scholarship
The Texas Classroom Teachers Association, along with the late Charles and Phyllis Gottlieb, has established a scholarship fund to provide financial aid to students not at the top of their class and who have faced hardships that might make higher education difficult or impossible to attain without assistance.
Rather than focusing on academic records, award recipients are selected based on the qualities that make them likely to succeed if given a chance. Recipients must be nominated by a teacher or counselor.
To be nominated, a student must:
1) Be a high school senior;
2) Hold United States citizenship and reside in Texas;
3) Demonstrate financial need;
4) Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale; and 5) Demonstrate traits of strong personal character and potential for success, as determined by the nominating educator.
The scholarships assist students pursuing a recognized degree at an accredited two- or four-year college, community college or career/technical school. Preference is given to students who are first in the family to seek higher education, and to those whose family income does not exceed twice the poverty level (as defined by the United States Health and Human Services Department).
Scholarships will be awarded in amounts of up to $5,000 per year, amount awarded on a case-by-case basis, for tuition, required fees and books. They may be renewed annually for up to four years based on satisfactory criteria and available funding.
Heather McMillan, daughter of Todd and Sherry McMillan of Santa Anna, has been selected to receive a TCTA Scholarship in the amount of $2500. Heather will attend Cisco College this fall, completing her degree in Psychology at Tarleton State University to become a therapist or teacher.
Heather was active in all SAHS activities, including volleyball, basketball, tennis, and track, One-Act Play, UIL academic competition, and involved in the local 4-H Club, serving as Club President. She was active in the Mountaineer Band, serving as flute section leader and as Drum Major her junior and senior years. Heather was also a member of the National Honor Society as a junior and senior.
